The Project
The Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens receives 350,000 visitors annually and is situated on Mount Lofty’s eastern slopes. With increasing popularity, upgrades were needed to meet updated universal design standards for disability and child/parent access.
The project involved demolishing original facilities and constructing two new female toilet blocks, one male toilet block, an access/ambulant/family toilet block, and upgrading all services. The new facilities were carefully designed to harmonize with the surroundings, utilizing blockwork, stone, and timber paneling.
Design and constructability challenges emerged, particularly regarding specialized timber battens for the ceilings and external panels. Collaborative efforts among Stride, the client, and Stallard Meek Flightpath led to slight design modifications, allowing neat batten integration. The location’s high winter rainfall posed further challenges, but Stride managed to avoid program delays by focusing on internal work during inclement weather.
In a 36-week span, Stride Construction successfully revitalized the lower carpark amenities area of Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens, achieving both aesthetics and functionality.
